| 1-Year e-Tourist | 180 Days/Year | Multiple | 72 - 96 Hours |

| Entry Visa (Paper) | Varies | Varies | 2 - 4 Weeks (VFS) |
1. e-Visa (Tourism & Business) Apply Online
Canadian citizens must apply for their e-Visa online via the official Indian Government portal before travel.
- No VFS Needed: For e-Visas, you do NOT need to visit VFS Global centers. The process is entirely digital.
- Timing: You should apply at least 4 days before your flight, but no more than 30 days in advance for the 30-day visa.
- 180-Day Rule: Even with a 1-year or 5-year e-Visa, Canadian citizens cannot stay for more than **180 days** continuously in a calendar year.
- Biometrics: Your fingerprints and photo will be taken at the Indian airport upon arrival.
2. OCI Card (Overseas Citizenship) Lifelong Access
The OCI card is a lifelong visa for Canadians of Indian origin, allowing them to live and work in India indefinitely.
- VFS Appointment: Unlike the e-Visa, OCI applications in Canada must be submitted through **VFS Global**. You need an in-person appointment at centers like Toronto, Brampton, Surrey, or Ottawa.
- Digital Miscellaneous: From 2026, minor updates (like address change or new passport info) can be done online without re-issuing the physical card.
- Restriction: OCI holders cannot vote in Indian elections or buy agricultural land in India.
3. Renunciation of Indian Citizenship Mandatory
If you were an Indian citizen and recently became Canadian, you MUST formally surrender your Indian passport.
- The Rule: India does not allow dual citizenship. You must obtain a **Surrender Certificate** before applying for an OCI card.
- Penalty: Traveling on an Indian passport after acquiring Canadian citizenship can lead to heavy fines and visa denials.
4. Border Security & Tech Rules Strict
Indian customs have very specific rules regarding technology and high-value items.
- Satellite Phones: Carrying satellite phones (e.g., Iridium) into India is strictly illegal and can lead to detention.
- Currency: You must declare any cash/monetary instruments exceeding **$5,000 USD** (cash) or **$10,000 USD** (total) at the customs desk.
- Drones: Importing drones into India without prior permission from the DGCA is prohibited.
