1. Border Checks & Entry Updated 2026
Although both countries are in Schengen, temporary border checks remain in place until at least April 4, 2026.
- ID Requirement: You MUST carry a valid **Polish ID card (Dowód osobisty)** or **Passport**. Driving licenses are NOT valid travel documents.
- Checkpoint Delays: Expect spot checks at major crossings like Świecko (A2) and Zgorzelec. Budget an extra 15-30 minutes for road travel.
- Freedom of Movement: As an EU citizen, you have the right to enter Germany to look for work, study, or reside without a visa.
2. Living in Germany (Anmeldung) Mandatory
If you move to Germany, registering your address is your first legal hurdle.
- 14-Day Rule: By law, you must register at the local **Bürgeramt** within 14 days of moving into your German flat.
- Wohnungsgeberbestätigung: You need a signed confirmation from your landlord to register. A rental contract alone is often not enough.
- Benefits: Without "Anmeldung," you cannot open a German bank account, get a tax ID (Steueridentifikationsnummer), or secure a mobile contract.
3. Working & Social Rights EU National Rights
Polish citizens have the same labor market access as German nationals.
- Minimum Wage 2026: The statutory minimum wage has increased to **€13.90 per hour** as of January 1, 2026.
- Child Benefit (Kindergeld): Polish workers in Germany are entitled to Kindergeld, which is currently **€255 per month** per child.
- Health Insurance: If employed, you are automatically enrolled in the German public health system (AOK, TK, etc.).
4. Nationwide Travel (D-Ticket) New Pricing
The Deutschlandticket remains the most popular way for cross-border commuters and residents to travel.
- New Price 2026: From January 1, 2026, the price has increased to **€63 per month**.
- Coverage: Unlimited travel on all regional trains (RE, RB, S-Bahn) and local buses/trams across Germany. It is NOT valid on high-speed ICE/IC trains.
