1. Automatic Residence Rights NZeTA Exempt
The Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement (TTTA) gives Australian citizens unique rights.
- No Visa or NZeTA: While others pay fees, Australian passport holders do NOT need a visa or the $17 NZeTA before flying.
- Resident Visa on Arrival: When you land, you are automatically granted a New Zealand **Resident Visa**. This allows you to live, work, and study indefinitely.
- Reciprocal Health: You can access immediately necessary healthcare under the reciprocal agreement.
- Character Requirement: Your automatic visa depends on good character—past criminal convictions or deportations can lead to entry refusal.
2. Mandatory NZ Traveller Declaration Digital Only
Starting in late 2025/2026, the old paper arrival cards have been fully replaced.
- 24-Hour Rule: You MUST submit your **NZ Traveller Declaration (NZTD)** online or via the app within **24 hours** before your flight starts.
- Character & Biosecurity: This digital form asks about your character and what items (food, gear) you are bringing.
- Free of Charge: There is absolutely no cost to submit the NZTD. Beware of scam sites asking for payment.
3. SmartGate & ID Rules Fast Track
New Zealand airports (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown) offer fast-track entry for Aussies.
- SmartGate: Australian e-passport holders (ages 10+) can use automated **SmartGates** for instant immigration clearance.
- Alcohol ID: Warning—your Australian driver's license is **NOT** an approved form of ID for buying alcohol in NZ. You must carry your passport or get a Kiwi Access Card.
- Passport Validity: While there is no "6-month rule" for Aussies, your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay.
4. Australian Permanent Residents NZeTA Required
Important distinction: If you hold an Australian PR visa but NOT an Australian passport.
- Mandatory NZeTA: Australian Permanent Residents **MUST** apply for an NZeTA before traveling.
- IVL Exemption: Although you need the NZeTA, you are exempt from the International Visitor Levy (IVL).
- Entry Rights: Like citizens, you will be granted a Resident Visa on arrival if you hold a valid Australian PR/Resident Return visa.
