1. Tourism & Short-Term Visits Visa-Exempt
Canadian citizens generally do not require a visa to enter the USA for tourism or business stays up to 6 months.
- WHTI Rule: You must present a valid Canadian passport when entering by air. For land/sea, an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) or NEXUS card is also acceptable.
- No ESTA: Unlike most countries, Canadian citizens do NOT need an ESTA to fly to the US.
- Canadian Residents: Permanent Residents of Canada (Green Card holders of Canada) who are NOT Canadian citizens typically **DO** need a visa or ESTA based on their original citizenship.
2. TN Status (USMCA Professionals) Fast-Track Work
The TN Status (formerly NAFTA) allows Canadian professionals in specific occupations to work in the USA.
- No Petition Needed: Canadian citizens can apply directly at a US Port of Entry (Land or Airport) without prior USCIS approval.
- Requirements: A job offer from a US employer, proof of professional qualifications (Degree/License), and a small processing fee (~$50-$56).
- Occupations: Includes Software Engineers, Management Consultants, Accountants, Scientists, and Nurses.
3. Study in the USA (F-1/M-1) No Sticker Visa
Canadian students have a major advantage as they do not need to visit a US Embassy for a sticker visa.
- The Process: Once you get your I-20 form from a US school and pay the SEVIS fee, you simply present these documents at the border.
- Entry: The CBP officer will issue your I-94 (Record of Entry) specifically for student status.
- Note: You still must prove ties to Canada and the ability to pay for your education.
4. Border Security & NEXUS Speed Entry
The US-Canada border is the longest undefended border, but customs are strict.
- NEXUS Card: Highly recommended for frequent travelers. It allows you to skip lines at both Canadian and US customs at airports and land borders.
- Currency: You must declare cash or monetary instruments exceeding **$10,000 USD** when crossing.
- Agriculture: Many food items (especially citrus and raw meats) are restricted to protect US agriculture.
